“Twenty million credits,” she said again.

The Royal Court Office was near the Receiving Hall. The office was small, and almost empty but for a dais and throne at one end where Kovar accepted calls from the lofty over a tightly secured comm.

He wore one of his magnificent, deep red coats, heavily embroidered, richly detailed in gold: no religious silver for this meeting. He’d chosen the informal afternoon jacket to imply a casual attitude about a matter over which he was not casual at all. It was open, revealing the long column of the snow-white skin of his powerful chest. His thick black hair was unbound and trailed over one shoulder, down the front of the coat in shocking contrast to his icy flesh and wine deep jacket. He wore slender black gloves made of the glossy skin of an animal.

He was alone in the office, as he usually was when engaging in state matters of this sort.
The comm would only show his upper body, and the receiver of the call would not see his soft, furred, informal slippers tapping a beat against a cushion.

The lady projected on the comm was stunningly beautiful, clean lined and still, her head topped with a magnificent and elaborately layered braided crown of pure white hair studded with gems. A long fall of her locks fell free of the plaited tiara in a glittering cascade. Her eyes were light blue and cold as snow and her face was long and slender, delicately painted, the lightest touch of pink on her porcelain cheeks, her eyes limned with contoured pastel shades that deepened her lashes and brows. Her lips were astonishingly red, and the paint on them glittered with the reflected light of tiny of mica flakes.

She wore a sheer vest of light blush gauze open to her waist, embellished with tendrils of embroidered flowers and vines, her rouged nipples visible through the diaphanous fronds. The finger of her right hand played among the verdant sequins, coyly trailing up and down the tableau.

She smiled prettily with postured care, her teeth very, very white between lightly parted lips, pleased to see Kovar before her so handsome and informally attired. She had brought him to her. This was not easy to accomplish, even over a comm.

Aeren played a game of Ice and Air with Seren on an antique board given him by Kovar. It was a beautifully carved set, with lovely old bits of selenite and azurite, worn smooth by many years of use. Seren was rather good at the game mostly because his playing was so chaotic Aeren couldn’t follow his strategy. When Seren realized Aeren was losing on purpose, he became vexed.

“It’s cheap when you let me win,” the Heir grumbled.

So Aeren finally won, and Seren took it amiably.

Aeren and Seren enjoyed their kiss goodnight again, and Aeren glared in Kovar’s direction as he left for his apartment to go to sleep. Kovar didn’t react, except to admonish him to get plenty of rest: they’d be leaving for the mountains on the morrow.

Aeren was stinging still from Kovar’s teasing about his affection for Seren. “Besotted!” The word made Aeren uncomfortable. He loved Seren with a pureness that Aeren treasured as sacred and it irritated him that the Prince considered this consecrated space a target for his mockery. He prayed his annoyance didn’t show when he spoke to the Heir, whose feelings were Aeren’s protectorate.

Almost everyone on Ovanan had psionic abilities, so privacy was very difficult to obtain. This made it one of the most valuable commodities on Ovanan. Nothing was more delightful and delicious than getting into other people’s business, especially if the other people were particularly beautiful, powerful, or famous. Since Kovar and Aeren embodied all of these qualities, the gossip about the Prince and the young lord sped around the planet with the speed of thought.

The news made the Avatar Etan, the embodiment of God on the mortal plane, the object of pity, having been cuckolded by his gorgeous, lithe, golden young lover in favor of the stern, mighty, and cruelly handsome obsidian-haired prince. The noble Shield Saveris, who was notable for his bravery as well as his distinct resemblance to the fair Aeren, was said to be bereft at his princely lover’s betrayal, as the romantic liaisons between royal and soldier had become infrequent and passionless, and the prince had traded in his steady companion for the erratic brilliance of a brattish blond boy.

There was a great deal of speculation over what sort of rift this romantic battle might cause between House Teramis and the House of the Avatar, though all knew Teramis was far more powerful, and the Avatar could not afford to lose its patronage. This public humbling of the Avatar was both a surprise to those who knew of Kovar’s devotion, and a delightful source of speculation to those who wished to fill the vacuum that might be caused by Kovar’s absences at the palace, both personal and political.

Handsome Saveris immediately began receiving gifts and flirtatious invitations, as many hoped to enjoy what royalty had enjoyed before them. While most androgynes scorned the mighty soldiers of Teramis as overdeveloped brutes, many secretly harbored a desire for a bit of rough. And Saveris was a very fine bit of rough indeed.
