The food was dust in Aeren’s mouth, but he did as ordered. Asha moved from the wardrobe to the table, bringing items of clothing and jewelry as requested at Kovar’s silent command. Aeren realized he was being prepared to meet the Inquisitors with Kovar.

Kovar ate unhurriedly. There could by only one reason why the Inquisitors were here, but Kovar was placid at the prospect of facing them. He stole glances at Aeren from under his long black lashes, but said nothing. The Prince wiped his hands on a napkin and took a drink from time to time. Then he begged excuse to go to his toilette to freshen himself.

Aeren pushed away from the table and did the same, trembling as he faced the sight of himself in the mirror. He splashed his face with water, dribbling it over the front of his beautiful shirt. He ran the heatwave, drying it frantically. Then he realized he hadn’t cleaned his mouth. He did so, then dribbled water over his shirt again, and repeated the drying process. He checked the shirt carefully for signs of soil, then berated himself for forgetting he had an entire closet of clothes to choose from to replace it. He felt stupid and out of control. He closed his eyes, willing himself to calm, over and over, before he found the strength to walk out the door to face Kovar again.

Almost everyone on Ovanan had psionic abilities, so privacy was very difficult to obtain. This made it one of the most valuable commodities on Ovanan. Nothing was more delightful and delicious than getting into other people’s business, especially if the other people were particularly beautiful, powerful, or famous. Since Kovar and Aeren embodied all of these qualities, the gossip about the Prince and the young lord sped around the planet with the speed of thought.

The news made the Avatar Etan, the embodiment of God on the mortal plane, the object of pity, having been cuckolded by his gorgeous, lithe, golden young lover in favor of the stern, mighty, and cruelly handsome obsidian-haired prince. The noble Shield Saveris, who was notable for his bravery as well as his distinct resemblance to the fair Aeren, was said to be bereft at his princely lover’s betrayal, as the romantic liaisons between royal and soldier had become infrequent and passionless, and the prince had traded in his steady companion for the erratic brilliance of a brattish blond boy.

There was a great deal of speculation over what sort of rift this romantic battle might cause between House Teramis and the House of the Avatar, though all knew Teramis was far more powerful, and the Avatar could not afford to lose its patronage. This public humbling of the Avatar was both a surprise to those who knew of Kovar’s devotion, and a delightful source of speculation to those who wished to fill the vacuum that might be caused by Kovar’s absences at the palace, both personal and political.

Handsome Saveris immediately began receiving gifts and flirtatious invitations, as many hoped to enjoy what royalty had enjoyed before them. While most androgynes scorned the mighty soldiers of Teramis as overdeveloped brutes, many secretly harbored a desire for a bit of rough. And Saveris was a very fine bit of rough indeed.

MAJOR SPOILERS!

Once again: I don't know much about this fanzine, and I have never seen it listed online anywhere. There is no publishing information, and the cover is bound on it backwards! Judging by the comments on page 1 about a new graphic novel collection, it must date to around 1997. Image Comics isn't mentioned as the publisher, but that collection was published first by Image Comics in that year, and Colleen Doran's self publishing company Aria Press was shut down after she went to Image. A Distant Soil is still published by Image Comics.

Since the 'zine has an encyclopedia of all the characters, this will come in as handy reference for the fan site! All art is by Colleen Doran and it's from the comics.

This is part II. Part I is HERE.

Chapter 3 Part 2

STORY NOTE: An Ovanan year is 14 years, so Seren is about 17 human years in this segment of the story. Ovanan children age slower than human children. He would appear to be about 12-13 in human years.

Aeren was asleep.

He’d staggered back to the water closet, this time on his own, and returned complaining about the soaked facility, forgetting that he’d been responsible for it, having been unable to hit the urinal in his drunken stupor. Afterward, flopping on the chaise in an untidy lump, emotionally and physically exhausted, he laid his head upon the pillow and was unconscious in the time it took for Kovar to walk back to his desk to get more fruit for Aeren to eat.

Kovar was fastidious enough to examine Aeren’s stocking feet for signs they’d been soiled in the water closet. Mercifully, they were clean.

The Prince examined the boy’s awkward posture on the chaise, and gently rearranged his limbs so that he would sleep more comfortably. Aeren grunted in his sleep. Kovar loosened the high collar of Aeren’s shirt, and reached for his queue, now an unruly tangle wrapped in an wrinkled trail of ribbon, and began carefully unbinding the great length of golden hair.

Book 2 AEREN

Chapter 3

“Well,” said Aeren, in a voice that once again dripped with bitterness, “that finally shut you up.”

Kovar realized he’d been holding his breath.

“I wish you’d let me stay drunk,” said Aeren, looking into his glass, and away from the pain and horror in Kovar’s face. The Prince shifted in his seat, the first nervous motion Aeren had ever seen him make.

Aeren's heart raced. He felt a guard softly squeeze his arm in sympathy, and he nearly sobbed aloud at the simple relief he felt at the small gesture. He felt naked and blind, his power crippled by the psi-blocks, small and weak among these giant people, and he knew that when he stepped into that office to be alone with Kovar, he would be absolutely helpless before him.

The sympathetic guard said nothing, nor did he look down at his charge, but marched him along until they reached the massive stone stairs that led to Kovar’s apartments. The Prince usually took his private lift, which Aeren had taken, escorted by guards, this morning. Aeren sniffed resentfully as he deduced that the Prince preferred to be seen striding ahead of him, a picture of composure, grace, and power, up the wide steps, as his newly acquired young ward, shorter, stumbling, and in an ill-fitting cadet’s breeches, trailed behind him. Everything Kovar did, Aeren thought, was designed to make others feel small, ineffectual and impotent.

As they reached the landing at the top of the stairs, the dark, massive, silver-chased doors to the apartments silently swung open. Of course Kovar could not have simple sliding doors, these had to take up space swinging about, thought Aeren. One had to make people stand back before one could get past them. Rather like Kovar himself.

Aeren was escorted to the gymnasium flanked by enormous Shields. Immaculate boots beat a rhythm on the polished floors of the halls, a rhythm his much shorter stride and uncertain step disrupted. He was unbound, but did not bother to try to fight his captors. He knew he’d lose.

He’d been scrubbed and fitted into a young cadet’s uniform, clean, and black and simple, covering him from his throat to his wrists, from slim breeches to shining black boots. There had not been time to tailor the fit. His hair was tightly bound in a simple, hastily constructed queue that doubled his hair on itself and halved the length, wrapped in bands that wound the gleaming mass into a club that swayed against his back as he walked. The psi-blocks were visible at his temples, the skin an angry red where they pierced his flesh.

The gymnasium was the center of Teramis physical culture and the Prince was present to take exercise morning and evening in the facilities reserved for his personal use and that of his close staff. On this morning as Aeren arrived, a small, slender figure among mighty men any one of whom could kill him with a glancing blow, the Prince was the center of attention, surrounded by courtiers who watched as he and an opponent fought with sabers drawn. Naked to the waist, both men had no armor or padding for protection, wearing only plain, fitted grey breeches and gleaming black boots as they battled. They had slashes of red on face and body, shedding blood in rivulets down their pale skin. Kovar had a long cut on his face. It dripped red trails down his throat.

“I was unaware,” said Prince Kovar, “that the Divinity was acquainted with Lord Acteon. How good of him to send you, his most beloved – intimate…" Kovar chose that word carefully and was rewarded with a hit "...with a personal message of sympathy,” he added. Aeren’s aura fluctuated. Kovar leaned back in his chair, his hands tapping the surface of his broad desk. The expression on his face was one of placid interest, but he was observing every tiny change in Aeren’s face, posture and in the color and light of his aura. He also observed that Aeren was wearing makeup. Fashionable among men and women at court, but the thick mask did not complement his complexion. The paint must be an attempt to conceal his flush response. He’d added color to his eyelids and cheeks, which Kovar thought unnecessary and unflattering.

The affair between Aeren and Etan was a poorly kept secret, and an explosive conflict within the House of the Avatar. Rumors flew that they had come to physical blows in their passion with one another. Aeren sought affection and approval from the man who had raised him from childhood, and Etan struggled with his holy orders. Fire and ice clashed. Most Avatars were celibate, though it was not a requirement of the office, and Etan’s periodic promises of purity were broken with regularity on the altar of Aeren’s beautiful body. They loved and hated each other in equal measure, fought like demons, parted like ambassadors of warring nations, and then returned, a temporary peace negotiated anew, soon furious and dependent again, and unable to end it.

“Divinity!” Rorvian gasped.

“Who is it? Do you have a name? A house?” Kovar prodded.

“Not exactly,” said the Avatar. He looked down and bit his lip. “It’s a face I recognize. I remember where I saw him…It was a long time ago.” He looked uncomfortable and bright red spots formed on his cheeks. He had trouble looking Kovar in the eyes. His aura cooled and waned. The memory was a deeply unhappy one.

“What is it?” Kovar said, very gently.

The Avatar paused and worried his lip some more. He took a deep breath, but did not raise his eyes. “I was a little boy. It was at the Lady Sere’s house.”

Kovar went cold. He could feel curiosity streaming off Rorvian, but Seren was as shielded as a fortress. Kovar hesitated then carefully took the Avatar’s hand in his own. He could feel relief then, surrender, and deep trust.

“Rorvian, I need you to leave,” said Kovar in a quiet voice of command.

PART I PART II
PART III Part IV
Part V Part VI

There was a clumsy scramble for clothes and dignity to meet Jorvana’s 15 minute deadline. A part of Kovar wanted to bark at her and send her on her way without her prize Major in tow, but he didn’t want to offend the Avatar or risk losing favor, even though the Avatar was slow to vex, and quick to forgive. There was no time for a shower with water, with blood in his hair, the smell of sweat and bile, and his desperate need to feel the warm, relaxing torrent over his skin. He had to settle for a few passes of the cleanwave, which did not satisfy.

Rorvian was not his valet, but acted as one this evening. Kovar hadn’t assigned anyone to serve him in his private apartments since coming to the Avatar’s household, and had been as solitary and celibate as an acolyte since Saveris’s death. He’d brought no servants with him, as the Avatar could not afford them and he would be insulted if Kovar paid for them himself, even though Kovar was considerably wealthier than the Avatar.

Even in his haste, Kovar carefully and reverently folded his soiled uniform. He removed the wide silver sash he wore, the symbol of his mourning, and set it aside. It was the only outward display of grief Kovar made after Saveris’s funeral. The sash had come through his struggle with Trevian unsoiled.

Rorvian presented Kovar with a clean formal uniform from the Major’s closet. There had only been time to make two of the expensive garments since Kovar had come to serve the Avatar, so his dress options were limited. He could have had Saveris’s uniforms altered to suit him, but Kovar had insisted on sending them to eternity in the company of his dead lover on the funeral pyre. They took months to make, as only an acolyte of the Avatar’s house was permitted to create them by hand. Kovar found the ritual and expense involved absurd, but then, he had insisted on destroying an article of clothing so rare and meticulously crafted it qualified as an art object. After that, he supposed, he had no right to meddle in the traditions of the Avatar’s house.

Kovar frowned at the silver and white garment Rorvian held out to him. “No,” he said. “Something less formal.”

Rorvian looked confused. “For a private dinner with the Avatar?”

Kovar had dined with the Avatar in the company of others, but never privately. And never since he’d come to serve Seren. Seren, though genuinely fond of Kovar, had been unable to get past a childlike awe of men from Teramis, with their size and severity and cool discipline. Saveris had been the exception: his easy charm, kind manner, and extraordinary patience had won Seren’s trust and his heart. And while Seren trusted Kovar completely, he could never quite get over the feeling he was being judged whenever the Major looked at him.

Everyone felt this about Kovar, but Seren was too young and insecure not to take it personally.

“No, no, something I’d wear to a night with friends. Loose trousers, a shirt. Didn’t I bring anything from home?

Rorvian was at a loss. Kovar had never worn anything but the uniforms of the Avatar’s house since coming here, so he had no idea what Kovar might have in his closets. While the Major moved the wand of the cleanwave over his naked body and grabbed for fresh smallclothes, Rorvian discreetly turned away to give Kovar privacy, and made a dash to the closet again. A servant would be used to this kind of intimacy with a superior, but Rorvian was not, and his cheeks flushed at the sight of the former prince in his impressive glory.

PART I PART II
PART III PART IV Part V

Trevian was a handsome man. Most of the Shields of the Avatar’s guard were. Their abilities notwithstanding, it didn’t hurt that they looked good in uniform, with their intimidating presence and size, moving as a unit whenever the Avatar left his House, their minds locked around him and their bodies as impenetrable as a wall.

They were bigger than most of the Ovanan upper class, considerably taller, as well as broader and more muscular. Ovanans, taller than most sentient beings, tended toward slightly shorter stature than the average for their people the greater their psionic powers were. The huge amounts of energy they used while learning to wield their powers as children stunted growth in formative years.

Children chosen from the creche for House Teramis were selected for their physical attributes as well as their power. Shields were favored above all, their primary ability being to thwart psionic invasion. Shields learned early how to blank their minds. They were surrounded by mature Shields during this training to protect the young acolytes from outside influence and mental corruption. This also gave them the advantage of physical development most Ovanan lacked. And that most preferred not to have.

Shields were the most valuable assets of Teramis. Few were sold outright. Most were leased earning large sums for the House through tithes on their earnings. Rarely did a Shield fail in their duty to the masters, as the virtue of loyalty was instilled in them from childhood.

The delicate physical form fashionable on most of Ovanan was not favored by Teramis. Some Ovanan even tried to make themselves shorter, or to breed children in the Creche to mimic the reduced stature of nobles. Androgyny made them more attractive assets. The affectation sometimes inspired a great deal of scorn. A noble was easily recognized by a powerful aura, which few non-noble Ovanan had, and no matter how dainty the height, the lack of aura was a giveaway that true power was lacking.

Trevian had an aura, but it was not particularly impressive. It was glowing a sickly blue at the moment, and did nothing for his complexion. He was pale, as many Ovanan were, and he had a thick mass of rich, wavy unbound brown hair to his shoulders, a nod to his vanity, as most soldiers kept their hair in a tidy queue when on duty. He had very large dark grey eyes, and generous lashes. His mouth was wide and full and red. The last time Kovar had seen that mouth it had been affixed to the crack in the Avatar’s slender bottom. Or, more precisely, to the bottom of a man who knew what the Avatar looked like enough to imitate him except for an accurate depiction of a few square inches of his private parts.

Seren wasn’t quite certain if Kovar meant what he had just said, and didn’t care to challenge him on it. He looked nervously from Rorvian to the Major, waiting for one of them to make the next move.

Rorvian looked at the Avatar kindly. “Would you care for another drink, Divinity?”

“Yes, thank you,” said Seren, quietly. Kovar didn’t quite approve of how much Seren drank. The Avatar sometimes lost control, meaning that Kovar, the strongest Shield on Ovanan, had to spend an inordinate amount of time trailing about after him to make sure that all-powerful mind didn’t leak something either terribly personal, or terribly important. He looked on as Seren accepted another full flask, and put it to his lips, drinking deeply.

Seren caught Kovar’s hint of disapproval at how quickly and deeply he quaffed the wine. He choked a little as he tried to stop in mid gulp, looking guiltily aside at Kovar’s stern face.

He glanced at Rorvian then, delicately licking his lips as he sloshed the flask a bit for emphasis and said, “I think I’ve had enough.”

Rorvian smiled, and took the flask. “Perhaps some water?”

Seren nodded, trying to reflect the sincerity of Rorvian’s smile with one of his own, but only managed a wan imitation. The Avatar looked pale, bruised under the eyes, stress showing through his translucent skin.

Kovar looked on approvingly as Rorvian returned from the bar with a tumbler of iced water, which Seren sipped dutifully and without enthusiasm. He dabbed his forehead with his hand, cold from the tumbler and Rorvian rushed forward to serve again, bringing a cold cloth for the Avatar’s temple and neck. These the Avatar accepted gratefully, and returned to sit on the couch with a weary sigh.

“Well,” said the Avatar in his soft voice. “Assuming you are not actually going to eat his heart and…you know…defecate it…what are you going to do about this person?”
